Vertical Form Fill Seal Machines

A vertical form fill seal (VFFS) machine makes the bag from film, drops in a measured dose and seals it. For powder, granule and snack products, the filler on top matters more than the bagger underneath.

Buying guide: Vertical Form Fill Seal Machines

The cycle in four steps

Film unwinds from a reel, wraps around a vertical fill tube at the forming collar, and is joined along the back. The cross-seal jaws close the bottom, the product falls through the tube, and the next closure seals the top and cuts the bag. Each assembly fixes something you will notice later: film tension decides bag length consistency, the jaws decide seal strength, and the dosing head decides weight accuracy.

Choose the filler first

Product Filler Our machine Bag or range Speed
Fine powder: coffee, milk powder Servo auger, dust hood, nitrogen Servo auger powder VFFS about 50–1,000 g 15–70/min
Heavy powder, larger bags Auger VFFS 420 auger packer 500–5,000 g about 5–25/min
Sugar, nuts, seeds Volumetric cup Vertical pouch machine about 10–500 g 20–100/min
Chips and fragile snacks Multihead combination weigher Snack weighing and bagging machine up to 10 kg up to 80/min
Cheese shreds, sticky granules Weigher with non-stick finish Granule pouch machine up to 10 kg up to 80/min
Single-serve powder, paste, liquid Auger, cup or pump Stick-pack vertical machine 1–15 g or ml about 60/min

Fill accuracy follows the same order. Cups are simple and quick to change but vary with bulk density, so expect about 1–2 percent. Augers hold about 0.5–1 percent when the powder flows evenly. Weighers cost more but protect you from giving away product on a 50–100 g snack bag.

Bag style and film

Pillow bags are the cheapest and fastest. Gusseted bags stand better on a shelf and need extra forming parts. Stand-up pouches usually come from premade-pouch machines, though some of our granule models list them too. Film comes as a laminate such as OPP over CPP, or metallized film for chips; its width sets the widest bag, which for our range runs from 120–320 mm on the basic bagger to about 420 mm on the powder machines. A reel change is quick, but a bag-width change means a new forming collar, so decide your pack sizes early.

Dust, humidity and shelf life

Powder drifts around the filler and onto the seal area, which makes leaky seams. That is why our powder machines carry an extraction hood at the fill point. In humid climates powders cake and film curls, so plan a dry packing room. For products that go stale, nitrogen flushing is listed on the coffee, milk powder and snack machines.

VFFS, sachet filler or flow wrapper?

Choose a VFFS bagger when the product pours or tumbles. If it is a thick liquid or paste in a small pack, use a sachet and pouch filler. If it is a solid piece that must lie flat, such as a bar or biscuit, use a flow wrapper; a bagger would crush or jumble it.

Supply and footprint

Most machines here run on 220 V; the stick-pack unit is 220 V, 50 Hz, three phase. Taller machines such as the servo auger model reach 2,700 mm, so check ceiling height. Compressed air of about 0.6–0.7 MPa applies to the pneumatic parts.

What to send for a quote

  • Product, bulk density and whether it is dusty, oily or sticky
  • Bag style (pillow, gusset, stand-up) and size
  • Fill weight and target bags per minute
  • Film structure and reel width
  • Voltage, frequency and need for nitrogen or a date coder

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a VFFS machine and a flow wrapper?

A VFFS machine stands upright and the product falls into the bag, so it suits powder, granule and loose pieces. A flow wrapper lays the film around single solid items travelling along a conveyor, such as bars or biscuits.

How accurate is an auger filler?

Our powder machines are listed at about plus or minus 0.5 to 1 percent of net weight. Cup fillers on our basic snack bagger are about 1 to 2 percent, and a multihead weigher is the way to get a tight gram-level result on snacks.

Which filler for which product?

Auger for powder, volumetric cup for free-flowing granules and seeds, multihead weigher for chips, nuts and sticky or fragile pieces, pump for liquid. The product, not the bag, decides.

Do I need nitrogen flushing?

For coffee, milk powder and chips, many buyers add nitrogen to slow oxidation. It is listed on several of our machines and is worth it when shelf life matters.
