Overview

Why ammonia

Ammonia is a natural refrigerant with excellent thermodynamic performance, which is why large cold stores and food plants often choose it. It also demands careful design and trained operators, because it is toxic and flammable at certain concentrations. We design and build ammonia plants on that understanding.

What a system includes

A typical plant has a compressor package, condensers, evaporators, a receiver, pumps and valves, and a control system. We can build the package around piston or screw compressors. The rest is selected to match your duty: freezing, chilling, or chilled water for process cooling.

Sized from heat load

Cooling capacity, evaporating temperature, ammonia charge and redundancy are not catalog numbers. They come from a heat load calculation covering product, throughput, building and climate, and then from a risk review under local regulations. Examples from other projects do not carry over, so each plant is quoted from project data.

Where it is used

Frozen warehouses, large chilled distribution centers, meat, dairy and beverage plants, and industrial processes needing steady low-temperature cooling. Waste heat from the compressors can be recovered for hot water in plants that need it.

Safety and compliance

Ammonia systems must be designed, installed and operated by qualified teams. Detection, ventilation, relief arrangements and emergency procedures are settled early, and the final design must satisfy your local authority.

Delivery

Compressor packages are skid-mounted and tested at our factory before shipping. Pipework, vessels and heat exchangers are supplied to the project drawings. Site installation support is available as agreed.

What the proposal contains

Each project comes with a written scope, drawings or a specification, and a clear list of what is and is not included. Shipping, spare parts and installation are covered in the same document.

Why ammonia for large cold stores

Ammonia is the refrigerant of choice for large cold stores, meat plants, dairies and ice factories. It is efficient, low in cost and does not harm the ozone layer. The downside is that it is toxic, so the design includes detectors, ventilation and safe piping.

This page covers a full system built around either piston or screw compressors. Piston compressors suit smaller plants and varying loads. Screw compressors suit larger plants running steadily and are more compact. Compared with our cold rooms, which use compact packaged refrigeration, this is a central plant serving many rooms or process lines.

Systems below roughly 100 kW are usually not worth the extra complexity, and packaged units are simpler. For larger plants, running cost is lower. A site visit is usual, since the machine room, piping route and emergency plan have to be considered together.

Frequently asked questions

Do you also supply the evaporators and pipework?

Yes. We can supply the whole system or only the compressor package, depending on what your contractor handles.

Is ammonia safe for a food plant?

It is widely used in food plants when the system is designed, installed and operated correctly, with detection and ventilation. A risk assessment is part of the design.

Can you recover heat from the plant?

Heat recovery can be added to supply hot water. The benefit depends on your hot water demand.

Is ammonia safe?

It is safe when properly designed and maintained. Systems have detectors, ventilation and emergency stops, and the operators need training.
