Truck-Mounted Asphalt Hot Box and Recycler

Overview

What it is

A hot box carries asphalt mix to the repair site and keeps it at working temperature while the crew works. A truck-mounted unit fits the bed of a truck or sits on its own subframe, so the same truck carries the crew, tools and material. The unit can be used just to hold hot mix, or it can reheat and recycle old asphalt when it is fitted with the twin-burner system.

Series and capacity

The series runs from 2 to 10 tons in several sizes. Smaller boxes suit pickup-type trucks and short routes. Larger boxes suit bigger trucks and longer routes between the plant and the work. Pick the capacity from your daily work and your truck, not by the box alone.

Heat retention and recycling

A well-insulated box can keep mix hot for up to 72 hours under suitable conditions. Weather, the amount of mix and how often the lid is opened all change that figure. If you want to recycle milled material or old asphalt, the twin-burner system is needed. Basic hot boxes do not include it as standard.

A hot box keeps hot-mix asphalt ready at the patching site, so crews can place it at a working temperature, while a recycler reheats old asphalt into new patching material. The basic box suits crews that buy hot mix from a plant and need to keep it hot for hours between loading and use. The twin-burner option adds recycling, so milled or dug-out asphalt can be reheated and reused. Recycling saves material but needs more fuel, space and training. Compared with our portable infrared heater, this machine carries and stores mix rather than warming the road surface. The two work together on patch crews: heater first, mix second. Choose the plain box if you buy mix, and the recycler version if you have your own milled asphalt. The vehicle needs enough payload and a chassis that can take the extra weight.
