Overview

What it does

The lamp is worn on the helmet and gives a bright LED beam for the miner. In the same housing, a sensor checks for methane. A microcontroller reads the sensor, decides whether the level has reached the alarm point and raises an alarm so that the person can react. One device therefore provides both light and an early warning in places where gas may collect.

Battery and charging

The battery pack is rechargeable. The nominal data for the standard version are a 4 Ah, 3.7 V battery, a charge time under 10 hours and a cycle life above 500 cycles. The final datasheet for the lot you order states the exact numbers and the conditions under which they were tested. A charger and a charging rack are available for lamp rooms.

Safety and approvals

A gas-alarm lamp is safety equipment, and it must meet the rules that apply in the mine where it is used. Explosion-protection marking, mining approvals and gas alarm settings differ between countries. The approval documents depend on the version you order, and your mine safety team should check them before use. This lamp does not replace the gas monitoring system required by your regulations.

Packing and charging

  • Sensor range and alarm set points
  • Calibration method and service interval
  • Charger type, rack size and mains supply
  • Lamp color, strap and cable style
  • Approval documents for your country

Care

Sensors need regular calibration and checking. We provide a maintenance guide and can supply spare batteries, chargers and sensors.

Delivery

Lamps are packed with their battery packs, and chargers and racks are packed separately. The number of lamps per rack decides the charging equipment for your lamp room.

Cap lamp or separate gas detector

A cap lamp with methane sensing is not a substitute for a handheld multi-gas detector, and the two do different jobs. The lamp is always on the miner’s head, so it gives light and an early warning at the working position without a second device to carry. A handheld detector measures several gases, shows exact numbers and is used for inspection by the deputy or safety officer. Most mines issue the lamp to every worker and keep handhelds for checks. Compared with our gold detector, which is a prospecting tool, this lamp is a safety product for coal and gassy underground work. Choose the lamp for coal or gassy mines where methane is a hazard. Choose a plain LED cap lamp for non-gassy metal mines. The methane reading should be checked regularly against a calibration gas.

Frequently asked questions

Does it meet my country's mining approval rules?

That depends on the version and your regulations. The documents available depend on the country and the mine.

Can it replace a gas detector?

No. It adds an alarm function to the lamp, but regulations may still require separate gas monitoring. Check with your mine safety team.

Are spare batteries and chargers available?

Yes. We recommend ordering spare batteries and a charger rack together with the lamps.

How often does the methane sensor need calibration?

Check the sensor against a known gas mixture about monthly, or as your mine rules require, and replace it when it drifts.
