Overview

What a top drive changes

In a top-drive rig, the hydraulic motor rides on the mast and turns the drill string from above. The crew does not need a rotary table and kelly, and the rig can drill as it adds rods, which saves time on 300 m holes. This model is a full-size version of that design, with a torque of 4,500 to 6,000 N·m that handles hard rock and large bits.

Size on the ground

The rig measures 4,800 mm long, 1,780 mm wide and 2,250 mm high, and weighs 6,000 kg. It is therefore larger and heavier than our portable rigs and needs a proper carrier or trailer. A diesel engine powers the hydraulic system, so work is not limited by a power line.

Setup and options

Engine power, feed force and mast stroke affect how fast the rig drills and what it can lift, and are specified for the job. Pipe size and any air or mud pump you plan to use also shape the setup.

Where it sits in the range

This is our general-purpose 300 m rig for contractors who need torque and large diameters. For rough terrain, the crawler DTH rig is better. For smaller crews that drill many shallow wells, the wheeled rig or the 200 m model is easier to run.

What the top drive gives you over our other rigs

A top drive hangs the rotary head on the mast and pushes pipe down from above. A spindle rig, like our rotary water well rig, grips pipe at the table and needs to re-grip each rod. The top drive lets the rig drill a full rod length in one pass, with torque at the pipe, which makes it faster and easier on the crew. The 300 m depth and 4,500–6,000 N·m torque place this rig above our 200 m models. At 6,000 kg and 4,800 mm long, it is heavier than a portable rig but still transportable. Choose it for mixed formations, deep wells and rock drilling. If your wells are shallower and soft, our smaller rigs cost less to buy and run.

Frequently asked questions

Can it use air hammer drilling?

The listed method is top-drive hydraulic rotary. Air or mud circulation equipment is specified with the rig.

How many crew members does it need?

That depends on pipe handling, and pipe handling aids can be fitted for smaller crews.

Is it mounted on a truck?

Carrier options are given in the quotation.

Can it drill with air as well as mud?

Yes, top-drive rigs commonly run mud, foam or air; DTH drilling needs a compressor sized to the hammer.
