Overview

The simple harvester

A reaper binder cuts the crop, gathers it and ties it into bundles. It does not thresh. Farmers then dry the bundles and thresh them separately. This is the cheapest mechanized route for a smallholder with fields too small for a combine.

The machine

A 5.5 HP engine and gear drive power a cutter bar with four row dividers. Working width is up to 1,000 mm; a harvest width of 0.8 m is also stated. Row distance is 100-500 mm. The machine measures 2.1 x 1.1 x 1.0 m and weighs 320-330 kg.

Output

Output depends on crop density, field shape and the operator’s walking pace.

After the cut

Bundles should be stacked to dry in the field before threshing. Keep the cutter blades sharp and the knotter clean of straw. Wipe the machine and check chain tension after each day. A small threshing machine from our range can complete the process for farmers who want to avoid hand threshing.

Compared with the mini combine and larger harvesters

This reaper binder at 5.5 HP is the simplest harvester in our range. It cuts rice, wheat or grass, leaves the crop in bundles and lets you thresh later. That suits small farms where labor is available for bundling and threshing and where capital is limited.

The mini rice and wheat combine (MM-MRW10A) cuts the same 1,000 mm width but weighs 1,000 kg and threshes the grain, so it replaces both harvesting and threshing. The tractor-driven mini grain combine (MM-MEC8A) uses your own tractor. The 92 kW multi-crop combine (MM-MCH92A) is for contractors.

Choose the reaper binder if you want a low-cost step up from sickles and your fields are small, wet or hard for heavy machines to reach. It runs on twine, so keep a stock of it, and keep spare cutter blades. Row spacing of 100–500 mm affects cutter setup, so crop spacing matters.
