Overview

What it is

A battery-powered machine skate is the driving and load-carrying unit in a heavy-equipment move. It is a low wheeled carrier that goes under or beside a machine and moves it slowly across the floor. The operator controls it with a wireless remote and can stand away from the load. It is used when a machine must be moved in place, installed or repositioned without a crane or a truck.

How a move is planned

Most moves use the powered skate together with one or more follower skates at matching height. The powered unit drives and carries part of the load, while the followers support the rest. The load is therefore shared between several support points, and the planning is about how it is divided. It is not correct to add up the ratings of different units and call the sum a safe working load.

What decides the selection

  • Load carried by each unit and the total mass being moved
  • Towing demand, which depends on the floor and the route
  • Height of the carrier and the clearance under the machine
  • Wheel material and floor protection
  • Steering: straight, turning or fully steerable
  • Battery, charging and braking
  • Remote control with emergency stop and signal-loss stop

Floor and route

This kind of equipment is meant for flat, clean floors that can carry the wheel pressure. Slopes, joints, debris, uneven slabs and an off-center load all change how safely a machine can be moved. The floor strength, route and the machine’s center of gravity should be checked before the move.

Planning the set-up

There is no single load number for this product type. A skate set-up is proposed from the machine weight, its footprint, the lifting points and the route, and ratings are given for the exact units in the quotation.

How it differs from the follower skates

This unit is the powered one in our machine-skate range. It drives itself by battery and takes remote commands, so it can pull or push a set of skates and the equipment on them. The two follower skates, MM-SFK (straight-line) and MM-STK (steerable), have no drive of their own: they are rolling supports that go under other points of the machine and rely on a powered unit or a tow to move.

That is why a typical move uses a mix. One powered skate provides motion; follower skates carry the rest of the load and keep the equipment level. If the route is a straight run, MM-SFK followers are enough. If there are corners, add MM-STK units so the machine can pivot.

Use the powered skate alone only when its stated rating covers the whole load and the route is simple. For anything heavier or longer, we plan the set together. The machine weight, its base layout and the route decide the number and type of skates.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add up the ratings of several skates?

No. Ratings of different units cannot simply be added. The safe load depends on the whole set-up, the floor and how the load is divided. The set-up is planned for each move.

Do I need follower skates as well?

Often yes. A powered skate is usually combined with followers at the same height to support the machine at several points.

Can it move on uneven floors?

It is meant for flat, clean floors. Slopes, joints and damage on the route should be reported so the set-up can be assessed.

Can one powered skate move a whole machine on its own?

Only when its rating covers the full load and the machine is stable. Most moves use a powered unit with follower skates under the other support points. We plan the set from your machine drawings.
