Overview

Built for the ground

This is a multicore low-voltage power cable with copper conductors, designed to be laid underground. Where single-core wire is pulled through conduit inside a building, this cable carries power between buildings, from a transformer to a distribution board, or out to a pump house or gate.

Construction

Buyers use several names for this class of cable, and the structure behind a name can differ: the insulation may be XLPE or PVC, and the cable may carry steel wire armour under a PVC outer sheath. The usual build has XLPE-insulated copper cores laid up with a bedding layer, wrapped in steel wire or steel tape armour and covered in a PVC outer sheath. The armour protects against digging and crushing, and it can serve as an earth path where your code allows. The exact construction follows the standard your market uses and the laying conditions, and is written into the order.

Sizes

Cross-sections available are 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10, 16 and 25 mm², which suit building sub-mains, pump supplies, street lights, small workshops and farm feeders; above 25 mm² a larger cable is needed. Three-core versions carry single phase plus earth, and four- or five-core versions carry three phase with neutral and earth. Core count and the matching size follow your design engineer’s or contractor’s load schedule.

Where it is used

  • Underground feeders between buildings
  • Supply lines for borehole pumps and irrigation panels
  • Construction site distribution
  • Light industrial and commercial building supply

Handling and shipping

Cable is wound on drums or coils to suit length and weight. Drum sizes are planned around container loading so that you can unload with the equipment you have on site.

The order is defined by the cable schedule (cores, cross-section, length), the voltage system, the laying method and any standard or test requirement. If your design engineer has already specified a cable standard or a core count, the specification sheet is checked against our construction before production.

Armoured cable versus building wire

BV and THHN wires are single-core and meant for conduit inside buildings. This cable is a complete multicore feeder that carries power in the ground, in ducts and on cable trays.

For underground runs, lay the cable in a trench with sand bedding and a warning tape over it, keep the bend radius above the minimum and seal the ends against water.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cable armoured?

Armoured construction is available, with the insulation and armour layout matched to your standard.

Can I mix sizes in one order?

Yes. Drums are planned so the sizes load together in one container.

Can you supply test documents?

Test documents can be supplied to match your project's requirements; send them with the inquiry.

Can this cable be buried directly in soil?

Yes. The steel armour and outer sheath are made for direct burial. Lay it in a trench on sand with a warning tape above, and do not bend it tighter than the minimum radius.
